RG&E Smart Meter Installations for electric and natural gas meters have begun. This will impact our customer base throughout our nine-county service territory. We began installing meters last week and are scheduled to continue until December 2025.
For your awareness, we wish to pass along the following information:
- A smart meter is an electric meter and/or natural gas meter module with two-way communications between the meter and our systems. The smart meter transmits energy usage and meter status information to us.
- A few weeks before installation, we’ll mail a postcard to let the customer know when we’ll be in their neighborhood. When we arrive, our installer will knock before beginning the upgrades. Our installers carry green or yellow ID badges, and their vehicles are marked with our logos. Please also share this with your staff as well as local law enforcement in case there are any questions about potential scams.
- Installation takes just minutes, and the customer may experience a brief interruption in their power. If their RG&E meter is located outside and accessible, they do not need to be present or do anything beforehand. RG&E will confirm their successful installation by leaving a door hanger the day we upgrade your meter. If we can’t gain access to their meter for any reason, we’ll leave behind contact information so the customer can make an appointment to have it exchanged at a time that’s convenient for them.
