Supervisor's Note: Traffic safety in our community

Traffic safety. It’s a topic that should be at the forefront of your mind each time you get behind the wheel.

Far too often, we receive reports of drivers traveling at excessive speeds and not obeying traffic laws in Penfield. This act not only puts your safety at risk but others as well.

With summer here, more people are outside including pedestrians, cyclists, and children at play. This makes it even more imperative that drivers in Penfield DO NOT SPEED and adhere to all traffic laws.

As a Town, we work closely with partner agencies to advocate for traffic safety improvements that benefit our community. A key part of this work is done by the Town of Penfield Transportation Committee which reviews matters relating to new development, traffic calming, and pedestrian safety. The committee’s work also includes providing recommendations for improvements on state and county highways.

While the Town of Penfield does not have a police department, we partner with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on traffic enforcement. With that, it’s important to remember that deputies have limited resources and cannot be everywhere all the time. That is why it is on us as a community to take traffic safety seriously, and always drive carefully.

Here in Penfield, we have hundreds of lane miles of roadways that thousands of cars traverse each day. Roads vary from town roads (typically your neighborhood roads) to county roads, and state roads. Each agency has jurisdiction over the roadways they own. However, the goal of every agency remains the same, to provide safe and reliable transit corridors. If you’re interested in learning more about what agency has jurisdiction over roads in Penfield, you can use the GIS tool on our website.

Moving forward, our Town Board will be actively reviewing what can be done to enhance traffic safety in our community.

I appreciate your cooperation, and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any traffic concerns.
