You may place an item on hold from the Monroe County Library System catalog to pick it up at the MCLS library branch of your choice. Some libraries charge fees for items placed on hold - please check with your library of choice ahead of time. Items may be placed on hold or reserved for pick-up at Penfield Public Library free of charge.
Borrow an Item from Outside of MCLS
The interlibrary loan service allows Monroe County Library System card holders to borrow library materials not owned by the system. You may place an interlibrary loan request at the Information Desk or by calling (585) 340-8720. Eligible items include books, microfilm, and articles from periodicals. Audio-visual materials, including ebooks, are not eligible. If a book is listed as "lost" in the MCLS catalog it can be requested. Photocopy requests must comply with copyright law.
There is no limit to the number of requests you can submit at one time. There is a $5 fee for each request, with one item per request. Multi-volume books/microfilm can be considered one item. The fee should be paid when the request is submitted. If not, then the fee can also be paid when materials are picked up. Most materials arrive within two weeks. You will be notified via phone or email when materials arrive, or if the Interlibrary Loan Department is unable to borrow the requested material.
You must have a valid MCLS library card to request materials via interlibrary loan. A three-week loan period is given for most items, and overdue fines are the same as for regular library materials. Renewals can be requested, and the owning library will decide whether or not to approve your renewal request. There is no guarantee a renewal will be given, but most requests are granted if placed before the material is overdue. Some materials may be restricted to in-library use only. You are responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged items.
