Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts celebrates heroic actions of Penfield DPW members with May Staff Spotlight
Serving the Penfield community is the mission of Town of Penfield staff members. This month, the Staff Spotlight recognizes five employees who deeply embody this mission.

On March 19, Town of Penfield Highway Department employees Todd McArthur, Jacen Dallas, Tim Short, Rich Gross, and Tim Blair, were traveling along Atlantic Ave to a job site when an accident involving a concrete truck and an SUV occurred at the intersection of Baird Road and Atlantic Ave moments in front of them. The team immediately jumped into action checking on the drivers of both vehicles, contacting emergency services, and directing traffic.

As a result of the accident, the driver of the concrete truck was severely injured and pinned inside the truck which was perched on the edge of a retention pond. With the truck on its side, the fully loaded transport drum continued to spin, flipping the cab of the truck over. The DPW team quickly turned off the ignition, preventing any further movement of the truck until the first responders arrived.

Upon arrival, emergency crews extracted the driver and transported him to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The driver is on the road to recovery, and he is sincerely grateful for the efforts and actions of the team from Penfield DPW. If not for the quick actions of this group, the outcome of the accident could have been much different.

In April, the five employees along with Director of Public Works Eric Tait, were invited to a recognition event at the Manitou Concrete plant in honor of the heroic efforts on that day. The responding DPW members had the opportunity to spend time with the driver of the concrete truck, his wife, and many other employees of The Dolomite Group.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to these men for springing into action on a moment’s notice,” said Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts. “Our community is so fortunate to have a group like this serving them.”

“For those who may not know, Public Works Departments fall under the classification of first responders, and this situation was a great example of why,” added Director of Public Works Eric Tait. “In honor of National Public Works Week, which is celebrated this month, what better way to share gratitude for their actions than to include them in this month’s Staff Spotlight.”

Thank you, Todd, Jacen, Tim, Rich, and Tim. We appreciate your heroic actions on that day and all you do to serve the community.
