Dog Control Officer/Guard

Department:  Department of Public Works
Non-Competitive Appointment
Grade 15
Minimum Rate:  $18.98 p/hr.
Standard Rate:  $20.88 p/hr.

Hours:  Monday – Friday 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

Typical Work Activities:

Dog Control:

  • Responds to dog complaints and investigates and takes appropriate action in compliance with state/local rules, regulations, and ordinances
  • Captures restrain and transports dogs to impounding/holding area or to owners
  • Initiates court action in the prosecution of violators of state and local dog control laws
  • Transports dogs to local veterinarians for medical treatment
  • Provides assistance to residents regarding other domestic and/or wild animals as appropriate
  • Writes daily reports of activity

Guard:

  • Patrols buildings as grounds to maintain order and checks and secures sensitive areas
  • Patrols parks and parking areas to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Summons fire department or law enforcement in emergencies
  • Investigates and makes reports of illegal acts, such as vandalism, burglary, or forced entry
  • Writes daily reports of activity

Minimum Qualifications:  Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.

Desired Experience:  Animal experience including handling and care of dogs, knowledge of dog behavior, and dog control methods.  Experience in direct public contact including conflict resolution skills.  Experience with patrolling property and grounds in order to secure facilities and maintain safety.

Special Requirement
Must possess a clean, valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.

Preferred Certification/License:  Possession of a New York State Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator (NWCO) license and a New York State Department of State Security Guard license
