Schedule of events for the Independence holiday here in Penfield.
All 2020 Independence Day activities have been canceled.
From Supervisor's Update May 21, 2020:
"The Town of Penfield is following suit with neighboring communities and cancelling Independence Day activities this year. Given the pace and reach of COVID-19 this shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but it is nonetheless a disappointment for us all.
Parades, fireworks, picnics, and all the festivities that come with celebrating Independence Day fit into New York Forward’s Phase Four criteria and we just won’t be there by July 4, even if public health trends are heading in the right direction.
I’ve mentioned previously that I am on a conference call twice a week with all other town supervisors and mayors in Monroe County. For several weeks we have been tracking health department reports and discussing the fate of Independence Day celebrations in all our communities. In recent weeks, many towns made the decision to cancel plans for July 4. There is a strong consensus in our group that local coordination is critical to public health—that is why Penfield is joining our neighbors in our decision to cancel Independence Day events.
Municipalities across the state and nation have to make these tough decisions about Independence Day celebrations and other traditional gatherings. In Penfield, public safety will always come first. Future celebrations will be all the sweeter when we are past the physical distancing requirements of COVID-19 and moving on with our new normal."
