The Town of Penfield now has a Community Victory Garden. The garden is located on a 3.3 acre piece of town-owned land located adjacent to 1724 Five Mile Line Rd., near Rothfuss Park.
The garden is divided into 6' x 16' or 6' x 32' plots that may be rented by Penfield residents. The rental fees are $35 and $50, respectively.
Watch this site for updates on reserving beds for the 2011 season. Reservations may be made by calling Penfield Recreation at 340-8655, or in person at the Penfield Recreation office, 1985 Baird Rd., Penfield.
The Community Victory Garden Committee's mission statement is to provide Penfield residents with an opportunity to grow their own organic vegetables, flowers and herbs for their consumption or for the needy. The Community Garden connects to Penfield's rich agricultural heritage, "green" initiative, and will provide for children's educational activities. The Penfield Community Victory Garden program encourages organic gardening, building healthy soil, use of new and old plant varieties, composting, food sustainability, community involvement, and intergenerational activities.
Volunteers are always needed for many aspects of the planning and oversight of the garden, as well as manual labor. No experience necessary! To volunteer, or for more information, please email srenner@penfield.org, or call (585) 340-8651.
