In 1795, Daniel Penfield began purchasing land in Township 13 Range IV and began building mills in 1800 along the falls of Irondequoit Creek to encourage settlement. The population grew rapidly, and in 1810, Township 13 and the adjoining Township 14 were designated by the New York State Legislature as the Town of Penfield. Penfield was the first of the seven eastside towns in the county to be established.
The Town of Penfield is seeking volunteers to help plan a year full of events and activities for its Bicentennial celebration in 2010.
All Penfield residents, businesses, schools, churches, clubs and organizations are welcome to participate. Opportunities range from leadership roles as event chairs, to supporting roles for individual activities. In addition, all Penfield organizations are encouraged to work a Bicentennial theme into their own programs in 2010.
