Penfield Recreation
will offer a new series of Organic Gardening classes this winter and early
spring, including “Growing Sprouts and Micro-Greens Indoors,” “Indoor Seeding;
Preparing for Next Season’s Harvest,” and “Planning Beautiful and Productive
Vegetable Gardens.”
Growing Sprouts and Micro-Greens Indoors
Sprouts and micro-greens are among the smallest edible plants on Earth. Rich in
vitamins and other nutritional essentials, they can help boost your immune
system to deal with the stress of the winter months. They are easy to grow
indoors right on your kitchen counter. Come and learn how to sow them, grow
them, and use them! Participants will start their own micro-green box in class
to take home.

Indoor Seeding: Preparing for Next Season’s Harvest
Whether you are an experienced gardener or a beginner, you know that harvesting
fresh food from you backyard is one of the great joys of gardening. That future
harvest requires planning and preparation even before the growing season
begins. In this class you will learn when and how to jump start your future
harvest by indoor seeding of you favorite vegetables and fruits and their
succession planting outdoors. Participants will be given a sachet of organic
seeds to start their own next-season harvest.

Planning Beautiful and Productive Vegetable
Gardens
All gardeners know how rewarding it is to harvest ripe, sun-warmed tomatoes or
pungent herbs fresh from the garden. Learn how to design a garden that is not
only productive, but also a beautiful, well-integrated part of the home landscape,
and how thoughtful plant groupings and crop rotation can multiply the harvest
one hundred-fold. Each participant will receive a variety of organic vegetable
seeds to start his or her potager.
