Earlier today Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo made a few announcements regarding the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), other county clerk services, and changes to vehicle and traffic laws. Following the directive of the New York State DMV, Monroe County DMVs will reopen to limited in-person transactions by appointment only starting in Phase 3 of the Finger Lakes region reopening. The exact date of Phase 3 is yet to be determined. In addition, a number of new transactions have been added to what can be processed through the U.S. Mail or secure drop box at three local DMV branches. As a reminder, all mobile DMVs (including Tuesdays in Penfield) are cancelled through 2020.
The Downtown County Clerk’s Office, located on the first floor of the County Office Building does reopen to in-person transactions on June 8. This office houses the land and court recordings, pistol permit counter, and several other services. Monroe County DMVs are not open to in-person transactions this week.
Through Governor Cuomo’s Executive Orders and Department of Homeland Security directives, the following changes to vehicle and traffic laws remain in effect:
All licenses, non-driver IDs and registrations expiring March 1 or later have been extended until further notice.
All inspections expiring March 31 or later have been extended until further notice.
The REAL ID enforcement deadline has been delayed until October 1, 2021.

As a reminder, a few weeks ago the Town of Penfield joined other neighboring communities and cancelled Independence Day activities for this year. Parades, fireworks, picnics, and all the festivities that come with celebrating Independence Day, do not align with public health standards during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a strong consensus amongst local governments that coordination is critical to public health—and that is why Penfield joined our neighbors in our decision to cancel Independence Day events.
