- Supervisor's column December 4, 2017

Last week the five members of the Harris Whalen LEGO Team attended the Energy & Environmental Advisory Committee (EEAC) meeting to present their tournament project on cleaning up the waterways in Penfield. The team concentrated on Harris Whalen Park to show how litter and other pollutants can find their way from a catch basins, yard inlets, and open pipe into storm sewers which flow to Irondequoit Creek, then on to Irondequoit Bay, and ultimately to Lake Ontario. They have developed a sign and other educational materials to share with the school and community. These five young men are to be recognized for their community interest and spirit; they represent our future and I am confident we are in great hands!

Friday morning I had the honor of participating in the 2017 “Drive 4 UR Community” check presentation at the Bay View YMCA. In recent years, Henderson Ford and Family First Credit Union have partnered together in an effort to help out the local community. For every test drive, Family First Credit Union and Henderson Ford donated $20 per driver towards the YMCA of Greater Rochester’s Annual Campaign up to $6,000. This was the 4th annual “Drive 4UR Community” which has now donated $23,600 to the YMCA’s annual campaign. Their support enables families and individuals who would otherwise not have the independent financial means to join the Y to do so. Many families have benefitted from this generous campaign. I would like to recognize Henderson Ford’s President Randy Henderson and Operations Manager Aki Henderson, as well as Family First Credit Union’s President/CEO Tom Dambra and Controller Pamela Ricci, for their commitment to the Penfield/Webster Communities.

The next Flapjack Saturday Community Fundraiser sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Penfield (FBP) will be held on Saturday, December 16 from 8:00 to 10:00 AM at 1862 Penfield Road. FBP invites you for delicious pancakes, pure maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage and more…all for just $5.00 per person. December proceeds will go directly to help support Cameron Community Ministries and their mission to provide hope to our community through emergency services, engagement, education and empowerment by offering after-school and summer programs, meals, an emergency pantry, and a clothing house. So bring the whole family! Meet up with old friends or make new ones. There will also be a special guest for this Flapjack Saturday…Santa will be joining you for breakfast! Fellowship Hall is handicapped accessible and the breakfast is outstanding. For more information and details, please visit www.fbpenfield.org

Over the weekend, I was honored to assist in the ribbon-cutting for the opening of K2 Brothers Brewing located at 1221 Empire Blvd. K2 Brothers Brewing is a NYS Farm/Micro Brewery owned and operated by brothers Kyle and Bradley Kennedy with the support of their family and friends. I was impressed with the renovation of the property and their attention to details in all aspects of the business. Small businesses are the cornerstone of Penfield’s commercial districts and we are delighted that residents Kyle & Brad and their families are part of our great community. Congratulations and best wishes for a very successful business!

From the date of this column there are 20 shopping days until Christmas. Please support all of our local businesses when looking for your holiday gifts. Penfield businesses stand ready to support you in so many ways with products and gift cards. Also, please remember to pick-up your tree from one of our many farms and garden centers across the town. Remember…healthy businesses make for a healthy community!

A special thank you to the Penfield Business Chamber (PBC) for providing the annual tree in the Four Corners at Schaufelberger Park. For more information about the PBC please visit their website at www.penfieldbusiness.org

Hopefully you have enjoyed the recent mild weather. However, all good things come to an end! As cooler temperatures and mixed precipitation arrive please drive carefully for your safety and that of the other drivers and pedestrians. We want everyone to enjoy their holidays with family and friends.

Until next week,

Tony
