The Town of Penfield hosts a Memorial Day Ceremony of Remembrance on the last Monday of May at the Penfield Amphitheater in Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony begins at 10:30 AM, remembering and honoring local persons who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, and paying tribute to veterans and active military personnel.
This event includes reflective music provided by the Penfield Pops Band, raising of the flag, and a guest military speaker.
A highlight of the ceremony is Penfield’s traditional Presentation of Roses. During this time, community members honor and remember active or fallen military personnel with a rose placed on the Veterans Memorial monument stone.
Each year the town partners with the American Legion Braman Post 1229 to hold an essay contest for middle school students who live in Penfield. This contest happens through a generous donation made by VFW post 820 for prize money to go to the top three entries. Submissions are judged by a panel of members of American Legion and the top compositions are read by the author at the Ceremony of Remembrance in order to receive their cash prizes.
